1. What is a vertical packaging machine?

A vertical packaging machine, also known as a "form, fill, and seal" packaging machine, is a highly automated packaging machine. Its core operating principle is to first create bags on-site using roll film (a roll of packaging film), then fill the bags with the product, and finally seal and cut them.

2. Key Features

High Efficiency: Automated and continuous operation allows for packaging speeds of dozens to hundreds of bags per minute.

Material Savings: Using roll film reduces material costs and requires less storage space than pre-made bags.

High Flexibility: By replacing different metering and filling devices and feeders, it can package a variety of materials, including granules, powders, liquids, pastes, and bulk products.

Aesthetically Pleasing Packaging: It can produce a variety of bag types, including back-seal, three-side seal, four-side seal, and gusseted bags, and can integrate additional features such as perforation and easy-tear notches.

3.Core Working Principle (Three-Step Process)

The workflow of a vertical packaging machine can be clearly divided into three main steps:

I. Bag Forming

The film roll is mounted on the material rack at the back of the machine.

The film is pulled out, passes through a tensioning device and guide rollers, and enters a key component—the former.

The former rolls the flat film into a tube. This is the "heart" of the entire machine. Different formers determine the final bag shape (such as back-seal bag or four-side seal bag).

II. Filling

The formed tube of film moves downward and passes through the longitudinal sealing device, where the longitudinal seam of the film is heat-sealed to complete the tube.

The product is dropped into the bag tube through the metering and filling system at the top of the machine. The metering system is selected based on the characteristics of the material and may include measuring cup, screw, weighing, or liquid pump.

III. Sealing & Cutting

After filling, the transverse sealing device (a pair of heat-sealing heads) acts like a pair of pliers, clamping the bag tube and heat-sealing it simultaneously at the top and bottom.

The top transverse seal forms the top seal of the current bag, while the bottom transverse seal forms the bottom seal of the next bag.

Next, the internal or external cutter in the middle of the transverse seal separates the top and bottom bags, allowing the finished product bags to fall out.

This process repeats continuously, achieving continuous automated packaging.

4. Main Applications

Vertical packaging machines are widely used, covering nearly all fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) for both solid and liquid packaging:

Food Industry: Snacks, chips, nuts, candy, noodles, pet food, condiments, tea, coffee, frozen foods, etc.

Daily Chemical Industry: Laundry detergent, shampoo, shower gel samples, skin care products, wet wipes, etc.

Pharmaceutical Industry: Tablets, capsules, Chinese herbal medicine slices, and medical dressings.
